Lichen planus is an inflammatory skin condition and the symptoms vary depending on the areas affected. It typically presents as itchy skin rashes which are flat-topped and purplish in appearance. In the mouth, vagina and other areas covered by a mucous membrane, lichen planus forms lacy white patches and sometimes leads to painful sores. It can also affect the scalp leading to hair loss, which may be permanent and discolouration of scalp. It can also cause damage to the nails in the form of ridging, grooving, thickening and sometimes, complete loss of the affected nails.It is an autoimmune conditiontriggered by-Hepatitis C infection,contact with certain pigments, chemicals and metals like inorganic mercury in dental fillings and medications
Some types of hair loss are temporary, and others are permanent.
