Vitiligo is a disease in which the pigment cells of the skin, the melanocytes, are destroyed in certain areas leading to loss of skin color. The patches of skin affected become white and usually have sharp margins.The hairs over the affected area from may also become white.It can also involve mucosa.
Vitiligo can be localized to one area, or it may affect several different areas on the body. The exact cause of vitiligo is unknown. It is believed to be due to genetic susceptibility that is triggered by an environmental factor. This results in the destruction of skin pigment cells. Risk factors include a family history of the condition or other autoimmune diseases, such as hyperthyroidism, alopecia areata, and pernicious anemia.It is not contagious
